Article one: 'Tour ops to re-start tours to Egypt'
There are many articles on the economic struggles Egypt are going through in addition to the unrest and war there. An article from 18th December 2013 by the Egypt Daily News discusses Egypt's financial issues throughout the year 2013 with a drop of around 39% by the end of the year. Egypt hoped to increase tourism over winter as approximately 559,000 last October rose to 672,000 tourists in November 2012. As a result of the civil wars occurring in Egypt, tour operators were previously highly advising tourists against travelling to several places there. An article on the current situation: 'www.travelmole.com/news_feature_P.php?news_id=2008983' informs me of latest updates. The civil wars and unrest has created a trend for a decrease to tourists to Egypt for obvious reasons and also an increase of tourists to Turkey as it is an alternate destination which is quite similar without the risk to tourists from the civil war. As a large amount of the travel and tourism industry rely on Egypt as a popular destination to sell to many tourists and many travel agents specialise in holidays to Egypt along with large mass market travel agents such as Thomas Cook who offer a huge selection of holidays there. Due to this factor of the civil wars not only do these companies need to compensate to customers who had already booked a holiday to destinations in Egypt but they also need to work harder to promote alternate destinations to maintain their customers. With this major change in the market many customers who are regular tourists to Egypt this may be difficult so the company must work more to push certain products and services to these customers and keep up their amount of sales.

Article two: 'Cruising popularity soars despite recession'
In the travel and tourism industry, cruising is one trend that is taking over the market. Cruising is currently the fastest growing area of the industry and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. The amount of cruising passengers rose by 6% from 2009 to 2010 and 'it accounts for 11.7% of the total overseas package holiday market.' It is shown that Brits took double the amount of cruises in 2001 taking 1.62 millions cruises last year. This is increasing to around 1.7 million this year and there is hope that it hits 2 million by 2014. More and more people are joining in with the cruise trend and it is becoming more popular by the minute. Although cruising used to have an image of elderly people's retirement vacation, its image is rapidly changing and the target market for it is expanding. Cruise-line companies are adopting certain images to appeal to all ranges of the market and targeting people who dominate the market: families. Companies such as carnival cruising specialise in families with younger children. To accommodate for this they have a lot of family-friendly facilities on board and personify certain parts of the ship to entertain the children and make the whole experience more enjoyable for them. As seen in the picture above the shit has customised the funnel to look like a whales tail and there are a lot of water-parks and other child play areas on board. However ships such as Seabourn target the higher end of the market. This cruise line specialise in creating a relaxing luxurious experience for higher budget customers which are usually couples looking for a vacation. Appealing to all aspects of the market allow the cruising market to grow and expand, which makes a wider demographic group appeal. A factor of the cruise trend is the recession. Fortunately the recession is in favour of the cruising trend as the cruises appeal to lower budget families looking for good deals. As the cruises are all inclusive the families see the holiday as better value for money so the amount of British families going on lower budget cruises are on the rise. A common cruising holiday for British families is from the UK to the Mediterranean and all inclusive as there isn't a long flight to the destinations and it is relatively cheap. The cruise ship is appealing to families as it is a safe secure environment for everyone to safely enjoy their holiday without worrying about danger. There is complete safety on the holiday as there is no civil unrest or terrorism possible so the customers are satisfied with the security and have no worries.

Hull: City of Culture 2017
Wednesday 20th November 2013; The city of Hull was awarded The City of Culture 2017. In their bid to win this they proposed a large number of events such as 1500 varied events and 25 festivals in the space of 365 days. These events will have a positive effect on inbound and domestic tourism into the country specifically this city and will increase the amount of jobs therefore increasing employment.
This award will also promote and increase the amount of 'staycations' which is a new trend due to the current recession. This includes staying at home but having day trips out, and the events throughout Hull in 2017 will increase 'staycations' meaning less people will leave the city and spend their money within their own city.
Liverpool recently won the EU Capital of Culture 2008 which they benefited from greatly including changing peoples thoughts and stereotypes of the city and giving it a 'new name'. They received an increase in the amount of tourism to the city which researchers found that 75% of new visitors were in fact influenced by the award they won. In helped the economy greatly having the award and the events they held in this year including a concert from Paul McCartney which helped raise £5m.
Hull hope to erase the bad name they have previously been known for with the success of their award and improve many aspects of their city. This award will help Hull become a popular place to visit as these events that they are holding will draw in new tourists which will create a trend. This means that if Hull continue to deliver to a good standard then it will remain a popular place to travel to domestically or inbound and they will receive more funding to make it a better place. Winning this award will hopefully be the start of an upward spiral of improvement for Hull and it will eventually be a very popular and successful place.
